ACS Career Fair board: 144 positions, 829 job seekers

Credit: @sciencegeist
Fresh stats from the ACS Philadelphia Career Fair, thanks to @sciencegeist:

Employers: 44
Positions: 144
Job seekers: 829

That's a ratio of job seekers to positions of 5.75 to 1, which is a lot better than the 8.76:1 ratio at ACS San Diego. More positions than San Diego, as well.

Fewer positions than last year's fall conference in Denver, unfortunately.

The official numbers off the ACS Careers database shows 121 positions for the Career Fair and 40 positions for the Virtual Career Fair. Aigh.

  1. 90,900 chemists (http://www.bls.gov/ooh/life-physical-and-social-science/chemists-and-materials-scientists.htm) and 829 job seekers. Unemployment is under 1%. Good news indeed!

  3. Or, a FakeMadeleine twitter would also be acceptable.

  5. Well, the 685 people who lose out can just start their own companies! Isn't that what Whitesides thinks they should do?

  6. Aha! Once again the ghetto dry-erase board makes its appearance at the ACS Career Fair. Seriously, is the ACS so poor (or, more likely, are its funds so misappropriated) that the Career Fair can't afford new markers?!

  8. Aw CJ, thanks for the compliment! (You weren't being sarcastic, right?)

Now, now...let's keep this civil. What's with all this talk about abusing effigies of Madeleine Jacobs? Rudy Baum on the other hand...

Sorta back on topic, I just noticed that the handwriting on the dry-erase board has been the same for the past three ACS national conferences. (The capital E and A are characteristic, especially the left hook on the A. I know, I'm crazy for noticing these things...been spending too much time looking at DNA gels.) How sad it is for the underpaid ACS schlub who's given substandard equipment to advertise job postings.

    1. No, I wasn't. You've popped up every time I've posted the board; by now, it's like a ritual. I'd be disappointed if you didn't say anything.

But I guess I'm curious -- what do you think would be a better means of communicating this information?

    2. Awww, you are so young! Before Rudy Baum was appointed to run the Ministry of Truth his job was Ms. Jacobs'. She did it in much the same vein too, except may be that where one has "carbon footprint" the other had "white male".

  9. Unfortunately, the positions will go unfilled because none of the applicants had 2-4 years experience formulating polymers for toothpaste tube caps, or 1-3 years developing windshield washing fluid for the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. One guy had 6 years of each, so the HR drones threw his resume out.
